Hexabromostearic Acid is a reactive compound that is used in the preparation of glycol ethers. It is a colorless oil with a boiling point of 350°C and a molecular weight of 270. The hydroxyl group on the molecule renders it highly reactive, leading to reactions with thiols, amines, and metal surfaces. Hexabromostearic Acid has been shown to react with an electron-deficient (halogen) compound to produce hexabromodiphenyl ether. This reaction occurs at the carbon-bromine bond, which is easily broken by light or heat.
