Tetramethyl-4-hydroperoxide 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinium oxime (TEMPO) is an organic peroxide that can be used for a variety of reactions. TEMPO is commonly used to generate reactive oxygen species for use as oxidizing agents in chemical synthesis. It has been shown to undergo a cross-coupling reaction with alkali metal ions. This reaction proceeds under mild conditions and utilises the relatively low temperatures of room temperature or below. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can be used as a solvent for this reaction. The reactant diazepinone can be synthesized from the hydroxy group on polyvinyl alcohol by oxidation with isobutyric acid in the presence of air at elevated temperatures. The 5-azaindole formed reacts with ammonium formate and aluminium to produce azaindole which then reacts with pyrrole to form transferable polymers.
