4-Nitro-alpha-methylbenzylamine is a psychoactive substance that has been shown to have addictive properties. It modulates the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system and can be used as an additive to other drugs, such as cocaine, or in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The drug has been shown to disrupt biomolecules, such as DNA and RNA, in rat brain cells. The disruption may be due to steric interactions between 4-nitro-alpha-methylbenzylamine and biomolecules, which are intramolecular hydrogen interactions with nitro groups on the molecule. This drug has also been shown to bind monomers with a high affinity for dopamine hydroxylase, which is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of dopamine.
