2,2-Dimethyl-3-hexanol is a volatile compound that has been shown to be an important marker for the detection of lipid peroxidation. It is used as a reagent for the determination of chloride ions in water by titration with silver nitrate. 2,2-Dimethyl-3-hexanol reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce the gas hexanal and hydrogen chloride. The reaction produces two different enantiomers of 2,2-dimethyl-3-hexanol. The enantiomer that predominates in this reaction is determined by the concentration of chloride ions present in the solution. This compound is also a precursor to other compounds such as fatty acids and hydroxyl groups.
