It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the guanine in the DNA backbone and preventing the formation of hydrogen bonds between the ribose and deoxyribose sugars. The nitrogen atoms on this compound also interact with the amide group of nucleic acid bases, which may contribute to its antibacterial activity. 5-Bromo-4,6-dimethoxy-pyrimidine is acidic, with a pK a value of 3.2 at 25 °C (77 °F). This compound binds to anions such as Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, and HCO3-.
