2-Cyclohexylidenemalononitrile is a bifunctional alkylating agent that is used as an additive in the synthesis of coumarin derivatives. It can be reacted with primary amines to produce acetonitriles and secondary amines. Reaction of 2-cyclohexylidenemalononitrile with acetic anhydride produces arylacetonitriles, which are used as intermediates for the synthesis of phenacyls. This compound has been shown to react with uv irradiation, leading to the formation of a variety of reaction products, such as 4-nitrophenol, 4-aminophenol, and 4-phenyloxyphenol. These products are structurally analyzed by nuclear polarization.
2-Cyclohexylidenemalononitrile can also be used to synthesize acrylonitrile from benzene using hydrogen cyanide as a catalyst.
