2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphenol (HMP) is a synthetic compound that absorbs ultraviolet light and has been used in sunscreens. It has been shown to be effective against UVB rays, which are the main cause of skin cancer. HMP is soluble in water and microcapsules can be used to protect it from degradation by light. HMP is produced by catalyzing with an electron-deficient compound such as acetic acid or acetone. HMP has a crystalline structure that appears as particles with a diameter of less than 1 micrometer. These particles have an electron-deficient carbonyl group that acts as an antenna for UV radiation, absorbing and converting it into heat energy.
