9-Azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-3-one is a catalytic, diagnostic agent that is used to synthesize diphosgene from the corresponding hydroxy group and monoradical. It is also used in the asymmetric synthesis of piperidine derivatives using aldehydes as starting materials. 9-Azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-3-one can be prepared by reacting cyclohexenone with phosgene and ammonia to form an intermediate, which is then reacted with ammonia and hydrogen chloride to produce the desired product. The reaction product has three functional groups: a hydroxy group, an aldehyde group, and an azide group.
