Oxandrolone is a synthetic androgen with anabolic effects. It is used in pediatric patients to help promote weight gain, improve bone mineral density, and stimulate the production of red blood cells. Oxandrolone has been shown to increase the concentration of cortisol in the body, which may be helpful in treating infectious diseases such as hepatitis. In addition, oxandrolone has been shown to have a protective effect on muscle tissue and can be used for active antiretroviral therapy in HIV/AIDS patients. This drug also has a beneficial effect on congestive heart failure by increasing erythropoietin production and reducing left ventricular hypertrophy. Oxandrolone is not effective for treatment of hematologic response or diabetic neuropathy because it does not cross the blood-brain barrier or enter the central nervous system due to its poor lipid solubility.
