Description:

Bornyl bromide is a chemical compound with the formula C10H14O. It is a colorless liquid with a camphor-like odor. Bornyl bromide can be used as a precursor in organic synthesis, for example to convert benzyl chloride to benzyl alcohol. Bornyl bromide reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen chloride and bornylene dichloride. The reaction proceeds via an S2 type mechanism, which means that the nucleophilic substitution occurs from the less hindered side of the molecule. This reaction can be used to produce nitro compounds or fluorinated compounds. Bornyl bromide reacts with magnesium oxide at high temperatures to form magnesium bornylate and diboron tetrafluoroborate. The reaction proceeds by radical coupling of two molecules of bornyl bromide, which are both nucleophiles due to their electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group, yielding dialkylamino radicals that
