(2Z)-3,7-Dimethylocta-2,6-dienoic acid is a natural compound that can be found in geraniums. It has been shown to have minimal toxicity and a variety of biological properties including the ability to inhibit enzyme activity. The structure of (2Z)-3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dienoic acid was determined by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques. The amino acid sequence from the 2D gel electrophoresis confirmed this structure. Enzymes that are inhibited include polymerase chain reaction enzymes, protein kinases, and lipoxygenases. This compound also inhibits cell lysis and sample preparation for biochemical analysis. Physiological effects of (2Z)-3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dienoic acid include erythrocyte fragility and increased liver enzyme activities in rats.
