Description:

3-Methyl-9H-carbazole (3MC) is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro. It also inhibits tumor cell growth by blocking the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which are required for the production of proteins. 3MC has been shown to be effective against human cervical carcinoma cells as well as Streptococcus aureus strains. 3MC may have anti-inflammatory properties, since it blocks pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL1β and TNFα. 3MC is an active compound found in plants belonging to the Rutaceae family (e.g., Citrus aurantium). This molecule contains one functional group, a carbonyl group at position 9, and belongs to the class of molecules known as sesquiterpenes.
