2-[2-(Prop-2-en-1-yl)phenoxymethyl]oxirane is a liquid with an odor like that of ether. It is soluble in water and alcohol, but insoluble in acetone or ether. 2-[2-(Prop-2-en-1-yl)phenoxymethyl]oxirane has been shown to be a viscosity modifier for lubricants and oils. The product has also been used as an impregnating agent and viscosifying agent. 2-[2-(Prop-2-en-1-yl)phenoxymethyl]oxirane reacts with cyanate to form esters at elevated temperatures or when heated with acetonitrile or ammonium salt. This reaction mechanism can be applied to the production of polymethyls, which are used as protective coatings on aluminum surfaces and as adhesives for aluminum oxide substrates.
