It is an indirect, noncompetitive antagonist of the 5HT receptor and has shown to be effective in animal models for the treatment of depression. The compound is available in multigrams and can be extracted from its salts with water. Methyl 2-amino-4-methylthiophene-3-carboxylate can also be synthesized.
