Description:

4-(Hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutanoic acid is a hydrolytic product of glutamic acid. It is used in the synthesis of cyclic peptides, which are used as antibiotics or antifungal agents. 4-(Hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutanoic acid has also been found to be a potent inhibitor of nitroalkane hydroxylation. This compound has been shown to inhibit the formation of carboxylic acids from nitroalkanes and lactams. The chemical properties of 4-(Hydoxyamino)-4-oxobutanoic acid have been studied using photometric and kinetic methods. 4-(Hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutanoic acid is not produced by bacteria, but can be synthesized from glutamate by spontaneous decarboxylation.
