Crotyl bromide is an allylation agent that is used in pharmaceutical preparations. It is used in asymmetric synthesis to produce allyl esters, which are useful as pharmaceutical intermediates and have been shown to have a therapeutic effect on degenerative diseases such as HIV infection. Crotyl bromide can be synthesized by the reaction of crotyl alcohol and bromine with a catalytic amount of acid. The reaction solution has a pH from 3 to 4, which is necessary for the hydrolysis of crotyl alcohol. The reaction proceeds via an intermediate called dibutyltin oxide, which undergoes spontaneous decomposition into crotyl bromide and hydrogen bromide gas. Crotyl bromide has been shown to inhibit the activity of Amp-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in vitro, leading to cell death.
