It belongs to the class of stannic chloride, dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, and has been shown to be effective against plant pathogenic fungi. 4-Methoxy-3H-isobenzofuran-1-one is an endophytic fungus that produces butanedioic acid, which is a major metabolite of this compound. The presence of 4-methoxy-3H-isobenzofuran-1 one was detected in China, where it was isolated from the fungus Mellein (Botrytis cinerea). This chemical has been used as a synthetic precursor for mellein.
