3-(Thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-ynoic acid is an initiator for the oxidation of organic substances. It can undergo oxidation to form reactive intermediates that react with other molecules to produce new substances. This reaction is catalyzed by copper, which oxidizes 3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-ynoic acid in a two step process. The first step involves formation of a peroxide intermediate, which reacts with a second molecule of 3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-ynoic acid to form an alkenyl radical. The alkenyl radical reacts with another molecule of 3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-ynoic acid to generate a 2,3,5,6 tetraene compound. The mechanism for this reaction is not well understood but it has been shown that it occurs in nature and is important in biomolecular chemistry.
