3-Chlorothioanisole is a sulfoxide and can be found in soil samples. It can be used as a substrate for enantioselective oxidation reactions. 3-Chlorothioanisole has been shown to undergo biotransformations with chiral sulfoxides, yielding the corresponding sulfones. The optimal reaction conditions are determined by substrate concentration and stereoselectivity. The product yield increases when the substrate concentration is increased from 0.2 M to 1 M. Optimum yields are obtained at substrate concentrations of 1 M and 10 M, respectively, for the (S)-enantiomer and the (R)-enantiomer, with a selectivity of >99%. Under these conditions, the product yield for the (S)-enantiomer is 2-3 times higher than that for the (R)-enantiomer.
