Di-p-tolylmethane is a chemical that has been found to be an activating and impurity. It has been shown to be present in the wastewater of some facilities. Di-p-tolylmethane is not expressed from plants, but can be formed by the reaction of diphenylmethane with hydrogen peroxide and ethoxyresorufin. The activated form of di-p-tolylmethane is metabolized by odeethylase enzymes, which are found in the liver, to produce benzyl mercapturic acid (BMA). This compound can then be detected in urine using assays. The viscosity of di-p-tolylmethane is dependent on its molecular weight, which can be determined using spectrophotometric techniques.
