N-[2-(2-Pyridinyl)ethyl]benzamide (EMPA) is a serotonin receptor antagonist that blocks the 5-HT1A receptor. It has been shown to inhibit neurotransmission and decrease the pain response in animals. EMPA binds to the 5-HT1A receptor, which prevents serotonin from binding and inhibiting pain transmission. EMPA has a low potency and its effects are only seen at high doses. The drug is used as an analgesic in humans, but is not currently approved by the FDA for this use. The drug has also been studied for its potential use in treating Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and autism spectrum disorder.
