- benzamide, 4-amino-N-(2-ethylphenyl)-
4-Amino-N-(2-ethylphenyl)benzamide is a neurotoxic drug that has been shown to produce conformational changes in the sodium channel protein. It binds to the channel protein and blocks its ability to conduct sodium ions, leading to neuronal death. 4-Amino-N-(2-ethylphenyl)benzamide has also been shown to be nontoxic at low doses in animals. This drug is currently undergoing clinical trials for treatment of epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Molecular modeling studies on this compound have shown it to fit into a pharmacophore model based on amides with low energy molecular interactions. In vitro tests have confirmed this finding, showing that it has an inhibitory effect on the ion channels involved in epileptic seizures.
