Description

5,6-Dimethyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine is a diagnostic agent that has been shown to have sequences that are similar to those of proteins in cancer cells. The drug is a chemokine receptor antagonist and has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain types of cancer cells. 5,6-Dimethyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine binds to the carboxy terminal basic protein in the cell membrane and alters its conformation. This leads to an increase in the cellular permeability and enhanced chemotaxis of leukocytes (white blood cells). 5,6-Dimethyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine has also been shown to be effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain.
