It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with the protein kinase signaling pathways that regulate cell growth and proliferation. This fatty acid has been identified as an inhibitor of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell protein kinase C and may be useful in developing medicinal analogs for cancer treatment. 4(Z),7(Z),10(Z),13(Z)-Hexadecatetraenoic acid induces apoptosis in cancer cells by activating caspase-3 and -9, which are enzymes involved in programmed cell death.
