Farnesyl acetate is a natural compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent, most commonly in the form of its mixture with geranyl acetate. Farnesyl acetate is effective against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in vitro by binding to the hydroxyl group on the 20th amino acid of ribosomal RNA. Farnesyl acetate also inhibits malonic acid production in vitro by blocking the enzyme malonyl-CoA decarboxylase. In addition, it can be used for the treatment of metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia. Farnesyl acetate is metabolized into farnesol and then farnesal or farnesene which are responsible for its biological effects.
