2-(Methylthio)pyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione is an alkali metal salt that can be prepared by reacting diazomethane with the corresponding alkali metal. The product is a white solid that has a melting point of about 200°C. It has been shown to react with barbituric acid and 2-thiobarbituric acid to form the corresponding quinone and diazonium salt in high yields, which can be used as a precursor for other compounds.
