2,7-Dibromo-9-hexylcarbazole is a low molecular weight compound that has a strong fluorescence spectrum. It is soluble in chloroform and methanol but insoluble in water. 2,7-Dibromo-9-hexylcarbazole can be used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of chloride ions and it has been used to determine the cross-coupling reaction rate between boronic acid and alkyne. This compound has been shown to have photophysical properties that are bimodal. The hydrosilylation of 2,7-dibromo-9-hexylcarbazole yields polymers with an optical red shift. The copolymerization of this compound with acrylonitrile was found to produce polymers with a blue shift.
