5,7-Dimethylindole is a methyl ester that is used as a solvent for the extraction of bio-oil from microalgae. It can be obtained by the reaction of hexadecanoic acid with 5,7-dimethoxyindole. The compound has a ring structure and is soluble in organic solvents such as hexane and dichloromethane. 5,7-Dimethylindole is typically distilled at temperatures between 100°C and 140°C.
The bio-oil obtained from this process can be used to produce biodiesel or other biofuels. 5,7-Dimethylindole is also used in the production of Spirulina food supplements.
