Description

Mesitylsulfonyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and is used in pharmacological tests to inhibit the production of erythrocytes. It is also used as a reagent in nucleotide synthesis. Mesitylenesulfonyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole is prepared by reacting benzene with sodium bisulfite. The chloride salt of this compound has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of G6PD activity. The structure activity relationship studies show that the inhibitory effect on G6PD can be increased by replacing the sulfone group with a sulfonamide group.
