(3aR,4S,5R,6aS)-Hexahydro-5-hydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-2-one is a lactone that is used in the synthesis of cholesterol. It has been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and cancer cells by binding to their receptors. The optical properties of this compound are determined by the presence of an asymmetric carbon atom. (3aR,4S,5R,6aS)-Hexahydro-5-hydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-2-one can be synthesized in a flow system with sodium salts as a reaction vessel.
