Product Information
7-Oxododecanoic acid is a hydroxy ester of dodecanoic acid. Hydroxy esters are formed by the reaction of an alcohol and an organic acid, in this case, a fatty acid. The reaction can be performed by adding a borohydride to the carbonyl group of the fatty acid, which will cause it to form a double bond with the alcohol group. This process yields a hydroxy ester with two functional groups: a carbonyl group and a hydroxy group. The carbonyl group is responsible for the reactivity of this molecule, while the hydroxy group is responsible for its hydrophilicity.
