N-Desethyl amodiaquine is a metabolite of amodiaquine and an antimalarial drug. It has been shown to inhibit parasite growth by interfering with the synthesis of proteins. Amodiaquine has been shown to have cardiotoxic effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandins. This drug binds to the Pfmdr1 protein in Plasmodium falciparum, preventing the parasite from synthesizing proteins that are necessary for replication. Amodiaquine also inhibits the activity of other enzymes involved in DNA synthesis, such as RNA polymerase and topoisomerases. N-Desethyl amodiaquine is active against chloroquine resistant strains of plasmodium falciparum.
