Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is used as an antidepressant. It also has been investigated for other medical uses, including the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Sertraline is used to inhibit the binding of neurotransmitters to their receptors in the brain by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin. It binds reversibly to serotonin receptors in the central nervous system and increases serotonin levels in synapses by blocking its reuptake into neurons.
