Olopatadine hydrochloride is an antihistamine that is used to treat allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, and ocular itching. It is a prodrug that undergoes rapid and extensive metabolism in the liver by esterases to its active form of 2-(11-Oxo-6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]oxepin-9-yl)acetic acid. Olopatadine hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells in vitro. This drug also has a low potential for causing drowsiness or sedation when taken at night.
