Fluorescein dibutyrate is a pharmaceutical preparation that is used to treat certain types of cancer. It is a synthetic fluorophore that binds to DNA and RNA, which can be visualized by fluorescence microscopy. Fluorescein dibutyrate has been shown to inhibit the cellular production of ATP in human lymphocytes, as well as transposable elements in mouse erythrocytes. This agent has also been shown to inhibit protease activity in yeast cell extracts and to bind to nucleic acids with high affinity. Fluorescein dibutyrate is active against a variety of bacteria and fungi, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces kluyveri and Schizosaccharomyces pombe.
