Echistatin is a peptide toxin isolated from the venom of the snake Echis carinatus. It inhibits integrin, which is an important receptor for cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix adhesion. Echistatin has been shown to have potential anticancer activity. This peptide may be an effective therapeutic agent against infectious diseases, including HIV and herpes simplex virus, as well as in the treatment of autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
