2-Bromo-4,5-dimethoxyphenol is a bidirectional hypervalent molecule that can be synthesized by oxidizing tetracyclic ring structures. It can also be used as a reagent to synthesize molecules with quaternary and asymmetric carbon atoms. This molecule has been shown to have target molecule activity against the neurotransmitter galanthamine, which is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. 2-Bromo-4,5-dimethoxyphenol is synthesised from crinine, an intramolecular reaction that occurs in the presence of an oxidising agent and produces a symmetrical molecule with two bromine atoms on each benzene ring.
