Ropivacaine is a local anesthetic that is used for epidural anesthesia and to provide analgesia during surgery of the abdomen, chest, or joints. It acts by blocking nerve conduction in the central nervous system and by inhibiting the pain impulse generation at the spinal cord level. The drug is metabolized in vivo to ropivacaine-3-glucuronide, which has a longer duration of action than ropivacaine. Ropivacaine can be administered as an injection solution, providing rapid onset of anesthesia with a short duration of action. The effective dose for this drug is 0.5 mg/kg body weight when administered intramuscularly or intravenously. Ropivacaine is not recommended for use in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding because it may cross the placenta and affect the fetus or infant.
Ropivacaine has been shown to cause cardiac arrhythmias in humans after electrochemical detector studies
