4-Methylumbelliferyl b-D-cellotetraoside is a cell-permeable and cell-impermeable substrate of the enzyme β-glucuronidase. It is used to test for the presence of β-glucuronidase in food samples and as a substrate for measuring β-glucuronidase activity in culture media. 4MUFCT can also be used as a ligand in diagnostic applications, such as chemiluminescent or bioluminescent assays. 4MUFCT is highly purified and can be conjugated to antibodies or other molecules for use in immunoassays.
4MUFCT has been shown to react with enzymes that are important for bacterial metabolism, such as β-glucuronidase, which cleaves glycosides (such as glucuronic acid) from certain glycolipids or glycoproteins, releasing free glucose or gal
