5-Bromo-2-(4-thienyl)thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is a molecule that has been found to be potently cytotoxic against cancer cells in vitro. The cytotoxicity of 5-bromothiophene-2-carboxylic acid is due to its ability to destabilize the microtubules, which are necessary for the cell's division, and inhibit protein synthesis. Studies have shown that 5-bromothiophene-2-carboxylic acid may also be used as a prognostic marker for colorectal cancer and may help in the diagnosis of other cancers such as cervical cancer.
