(E)-N-(Phenylimino)acetamide is a polymer that reversibly changes its viscosity in response to the amount of ultraviolet light it is exposed to. The polymer film will become more viscous when exposed to UV radiation, conversely becoming less viscous when the UV radiation is removed. This polymer can be used for many different applications such as activating a transition metal ion, immobilizing something with a salt solution, or dampening an object's vibration. It has been shown that the polymer film can be activated by the presence of nitro groups and naphthalene. The activation of these molecules will lead to increased viscosity in the polymer film.
