2-Amino-5-(methylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a synthetic diamide that has been shown to be an inhibitor of bacterial growth. It binds to the sulfhydryl group in enzymes such as penicillin amidase and acetylcholinesterase, which are required for bacterial cell wall synthesis. 2-Amino-5-(methylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole also has been shown to have antiplatelet aggregation activity and can be used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis.
2-Amino-5-(methylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole is soluble in water and hydrochloric acid but insoluble in ethanol. The crystals are colorless and have a monoclinic crystal system with space group P21/c. The compound shows optical properties that depend on the wavelength
