3-Aminobenzenesulphonamide is a sulfonamide drug that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which catalyzes the conversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. 3-Aminobenzenesulphonamide is not active against Gram-positive bacteria, but it does have some inhibitory effects on Gram-negative bacteria. 3-Aminobenzenesulphonamide is used in tropical medicine for the treatment of malaria. It has been shown to be effective at inhibiting the growth of erythrocytes infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.
