Acetoxyacetyl chloride is an organic chemical that is used as a reagent in the synthesis of enantiopure compounds. It reacts with hydroxyl groups to form carbonic acid and hydrogen. Acetoxyacetyl chloride is used in the preparation of drugs for the treatment of influenza, infectious diseases, and cancer. Acetoxyacetyl chloride also has been found to have receptor activity for ATP-dependent potassium channels, which may be useful for treating cardiac arrhythmia. Acetoxyacetyl chloride can be synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with acetone in the presence of a catalyst such as zinc powder or copper(II) sulfate.
