3-Amino-2-chloropyridine is a chemical compound that is structurally related to podophyllotoxin. It has been shown to inhibit the production of 5,6-dihydrofolic acid in the liver and can be used as a chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer. 3-Amino-2-chloropyridine binds to copper ions and forms an intermediate diazonium salt. The carbonyl group on this intermediate reacts with an aminopyridine, which then undergoes hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid to release hydrogen chloride. This reaction mechanism results in a low energy state and is considered to be the reason for its toxicity profile.
