2-Amino-5-hydroxypyridine is an analytical method used to measure the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), in response to dextran sulfate. The 2-amino group acts as a proton acceptor and the 5-hydroxypyridine moiety acts as a nucleophile. The reaction between these two groups forms a hydroxyl group that can be detected using infrared spectroscopy. This method is capable of detecting TNF-α levels in vivo during bowel disease treatment. It has been shown that inflamed tissues produce more TNF-α than healthy tissues, so this test may be useful for monitoring inflammatory bowel disease activity and measuring the effectiveness of treatments for this condition.
2-Amino-5-hydroxypyridine has also been shown to act as an effective analgesic when combined with hydrochloric acid and hydroxyl group, which are necessary
