It can be converted to 2-chloroadenine, which has been shown to cause damage to cells in tissue culture. 6-Amino-2-iodopurine has also been shown to cause sarcomatous transformation of skin cells and the formation of 2-chloroadenosine and 2-aminoadenosine. These compounds are toxic and have been found in damaged DNA. 6-Amino-2-iodopurine also has substituents on the purines, which are damaged when they react with DNA.
