4-Acetamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (ATMP) is a synthetic compound that has been used for the preparation of biomolecules. ATMP is prepared in two steps from hexane and acetonitrile. The first step involves protonation of the nitrile group to form an acetamido group followed by condensation with a piperidone ring. The second step involves addition of a chloride ion to form an ester. ATMP can be used as a solvent in preparative methods because it is insoluble in water and has low energy interactions. In addition, this molecule's hydrophobic character allows it to interact with hydrodynamic interactions.
