(alphaS)-alpha-Amino-5-Fluoro-3,4-Dihydro-2,4-Dioxo-1(2H)-Pyrimidinepropanoicacid is a glutamate receptor antagonist. It binds to the NMDA receptor and blocks the transmission of excitatory signals by binding to the glycine site on the receptor. (alphaS)-alpha-Amino-5-Fluoro-3,4-Dihydro-2,4-Dioxo-1(2H)-Pyrimidinepropanoicacid prevents neuronal death by blocking excitotoxic neurotransmission in vitro and in vivo. The drug has potent antagonistic activity against both AMPA and kainate receptors. The drug has been shown to be effective in preventing seizures induced by short term exposure to high levels of glutamate as well as chronic administration of kainate or quinolinic acid.
