Aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate is an acylation agent that reacts with amines to form N-acylureas. The reaction products depend on the identity of the amine and the reaction conditions, but can include a variety of alkyl and aryl sulfonates, carboxylic acid esters, and mixed anhydrides. Aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate has been used in carbohydrate chemistry and as a catalyst for salt metathesis reactions. It also has been found to react with carbonyl groups in organic synthesis.
